Case Study – Bonne Maman

The Brief

Our client asked as to produce an invite for Bonne Maman to a pre-release screening of the new Ridley Scott film ‘A Good Year’.
Originally they had asked for 150 A5 invites with an image on the front and details of the screening on the reverse.
After talking to them about image personalisation we suggested that the image of the jar on the front of the invite could contain the name of each person to whom it was being sent.
To show them what was achievable we produced a one off sample for them to present to their client.
They were delighted with it!

The Data

The list of names for the invites were supplied as a word file, which was imported into excel, then exported as a CSV file.
A section of the final CSV file looked like this (names have been changed for this example):

Image Personalisation

We were supplied an original transparency to use on the front of the invite which we scanned, then retouched to make a master background file.
Original scan and retouched version

The next job was to create a script which would automatically read each line of the csv file, take the persons name and place that into the image.
We used the Bonne Maman typeface for the name and distorted it round the label adding sutble highlight and shadows.

The image was then saved using a unique filename, then reset back to the blank master version and repeated with the next line of data.
This fully automated process took under half an hour for all 150 names.

Page Layout

The main layout for the postcard was produced in QuarkXPress.
This contained a variable picture box which, when linked with the csv file, changed for each name.
The back of the flyer was common to all invitees.

Print

The invites were printed four up on an SRA3 Sheet on 240gsm Fedrigoni Tintoretto Gesso’/ This particular stock at has a textured surface and expensive feel.
Once printed they were trimmed to A5, shrink wrapped and despatched to our client.

Is the typeface called “Bonne Maman”? If not, what font is it?

Do you happen to know where I can find BonneMaman (in a Mac-friendly form)? My (French) mother-in-law makes jam from everything (even rabbits – eek) and it’s given me an idea…

I thought that was a stroke of genius you had, by the way.

Any help much appreciated. If you ever need help on the translation front I might be able to return the favour.

    Best regards
